THE HISTORY OF THE GREEN’S FARMS SCHOOL SONG

In the summer of 1999, the first GFS principal, Mrs. Angela Wormser, along with Assistant Principals, Ms. Brenda Anziano & Mrs. Beth Heroux were working feverishly with the town and its contractors to complete the GFS renovation before the beginning of the 1999-2000 school year.  They had hired all new teachers and bought desks, chairs, lights, wipe boards and everything needed to outfit 25 new classrooms, the auditorium, cafeteria, gym, art room, music room, Spanish rooms, offices and meeting spaces.

Just before the school year was to begin, the administrative team learned that the new building would not be able to accommodate the Kindergarteners, 1st graders or 2nd graders until February AND the music teacher they’d hired had decided not to take the job.

Mrs. Wormser quickly went through music teacher  applications and met with Mrs. Suzanne Sherman Propp, who had recently left a career in the music industry and had only taught music for one year. Mrs. Wormser said: “I just want someone who can write a school song.”

Mrs. Propp said: “I can do that.”

A week later, as Mrs. Wormser was scouting alternative locations for the incoming GFS Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders, she told Mrs. Propp to meet her in the parking lot of the Conservative Synagogue on Hillspoint Road (because they’d offered up space to temporarily house the K, 1 & 2 students). It was pouring rain and the synagogue was not yet opened, so Mrs. Propp propped open the trunk of her Jeep and sat inside the trunk to play the song.

After hearing the song, Mrs. Wormser said: “I cried. You’re hired.”

Soon after, the first group of families to attend the new GFS were invited to a party at Compo Beach hosted by the newly formed PTA (made up of families from Long Lots and King’s Highway and led by parents ??? Fiona Garland and Michele Wrubel).  Mrs. Wormser asked Mrs. Propp to play the new school song and came up with the funny idea to ask Mrs. Propp to stand and sing from the top of one of the picnic tables.

When school started at the end of August in 1999, only the 3rd and 4th graders could attend school at 17 Morningside Drive South (there was no 5th grade that first year); the Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders had to go to school in makeshift classrooms at Long Lots until February.

One of our paraprofessionals, Mrs. Bobbi Essagof, was the GFS secretary, holding court at a temporary desk in the Long Lots office; people regularly mistook her for the GFS principal, since Mrs. Wormser was shuttling between 17 Morningside Drive South, Hyde Lane and Town Hall trying to complete the project as soon as possible. The Art, Music, P.E. and Spanish teachers also shuttled between the two schools in order to teach all of the GFS students.

We were all VERY happy when, after February break in the year 2000, we were able to be all together in the same building.
